A meeting on the future of Pennsylvania Mosaic was held on Sunday, April 20, 2003.  As a result of this meeting, Pennsylvania Mosaic has undergone some organizational changes.  We will no longer have a newsletter, and the telephone hotline has been cancelled.  All events will be announced by this web site and via e-mail.  We will also no longer have an official membership.  Instead there will be a fee of $2, $1, or $0, at the discretion of the trip leader.  If you are currently a member, and feel that you should not have to pay for an event because your membership has not yet expired, you can attend the event for free.  By contributing your fee to an event, you gain the right to vote on how the money is spent at board meetings.

December

 

§         Sunday December 9  10:30 am  Chanukah Hike  We will go on a hike around the lake at Core Creek state park, followed by browsing the historic district of Newtown, PA.  Please also bring a pollyanna gift valued $5 or less for exchange.  We will meet at the Tiffany Diner at the intersection of Roosevelt and Welsh Boulevards in the Northeast, then carpool to the park.  For more information contact Janet at 215-673-9605.

§         Tuesday December 25  9:30 am  Trip to Longwood Gardens  The holiday festivities at the gardens include a heritage exhibit at the Peirce-du Pont house, a pipe organ and gallery with organ sing-alongs, and ice skating performances.  The admission is $16, with an extra $4 for the ice skating.  We will meet at the Bennigans at Cottman and Bustleton at 9:30 am, then carpool to the gardens.  For more information contact Janet at 215-673-9605.

§         Sunday December 30  12 noon  Trip to the Academy of Natural Sciences  The museum currently features a live butterfly exhibit and an Amazon River exhibit with live fish.  We will meet at the steps of the Academy of Natural Sciences at 19th and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway at 12 noon, and there is a cost of $10 for the museum, and $2 extra for the butterfly exhibit.  For more information contact Gale at 215-331-8194.  Note that this event was originally December 16, and was rescheduled.

 

 

January

 

§         Saturday January 12  4:30 pm  Classical Music Concert  at the Kimmel Center at Broad and Spruce.  The concert features the Tchaikovsky overture from Romeo and Juliet, a contemporary piece by Jennifer Higdon, and Bernstein’s symphonic dances from West Side Story.  We will meet at 4:30 pm in front of the center to buy rush tickets, then go out for dinner, and come back for the concert.  Please note that the tickets may sell out, so you need to get to the box office at 4:30 pm.  The cost of the tickets is $10, and for more information contact Howard at 215-943-2746.

§         Wednesday January 16  6:30 pm  Club Meeting  at the Boulevard Diner at 11650 Roosevelt Boulevard.  At the meeting we will discuss club business and plan upcoming events for February and March.  For more information contact Jon at 856-787-0325.

§         Sunday January 20  2 pm  Dinner and a Movie  We will see a movie at the United Artists Grant Plaza movie theater at 1619 Grant Ave., followed by dinner at the Copabanana restaurant.  For more information contact Jay at 215-887-9530.

§         Saturday January 26  6:30 pm  Philadelphia Wings Lacrosse Game  We will meet at 6:30 pm at the Wachovia Center box office at Broad and Pattison for the game which starts at 7:30 pm.  Tickets are $20.  For more information contact Rich at 215-464-9677.

§         Saturday February 16  1 pm  Tour the Fabric Museum  The museum features modern art made out of new materials and media, as well as a workshop where fabrics are made.  We will meet at 1 pm at the museum at 1222 Arch Street, then tour the museum and possibly go out to eat afterwards.  The museum is free, but a $5 donation is requested.  For more information contact Janet at 215-673-9605.

§         Sunday February 24  1 pm  Star Wars Exhibit  at the Franklin Institute.  The exhibit features props from the 6 Star Wars films and 2 engineering design labs where you can create and test your own robots.  We will meet at the entrance of the museum at 20th and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway at 1 pm, and the $20.50 ticket includes the exhibit, the museum itself and the planetarium.  For more information contact Jay at 215-887-9530.

§         Sunday March 9  11:30 am  Philadelphia Flower Show  This year’s theme is “Jazz it up”, featuring roaring 20’s and New Orleans French Quarter themed exhibits.  We will meet at the Chinese Soup Bowl sculpture under the escalator in the left building as you face the Philadelphia Convention Center at 12th and Arch.  Afterwards we will go out for Malaysian food.  Tickets are $26 at the door or $22 in advance.  For more information contact Gale at 215-331-8194.

§         Sunday March 16  9 am  Cape May Hike  Come enjoy a mild nature walk in the sand dunes and wilderness of Cape May.  We will meet at 9 am at the Girard El stop at 2nd and Girard in Philadelphia, then carpool to Cape May.  At Cape May we will take a short walk in town for about ½ hour, have lunch and then go for a longer walk.  For more information contact Herb at 215-426-0529.

§         Saturday May 3  11:30 am  Annual Country Fair  at the Walter Biddle Saul high school of agricultural sciences at 7100 Henry Ave., which is at Henry and Cinnaminson in Roxborough.  Enjoy a hay ride, plant sale, rodeo demonstration, petting zoo, flee market, Bar-b-que chicken dinner, and more.  We will meet at 11:30 am at the school sign which is in front of the dairy barn across Henry Ave. from the main school building.  If weather permits, we will go for a walk in Valley Green afterwards.  For more information contact Gale at 215-331-8194.

§         Sunday May 4  8:30 am  Hike Mount Minsi  Come enjoy a moderately difficult hike along the Appalachian trail to the top of Mount Minsi.  The hike features beautiful views of the Delaware Water Gap and Rhododendrons in bloom.  Bring hiking boots, water, and lunch.  We will have lunch on the trail and possibly dinner out.  We will meet at the Tiffany Diner the intersection of Roosevelt and Welsh Boulevards in the Northeast, then carpool to the park.  For more information contact Jon at 856-787-0325.

§         Sunday May 11  1 pm  Hike, Club Meeting, and Elections  We will meet at 1 pm at the Dunkin Donuts at the intersection of Caster and Bustleton, then go on a 5-6 mile hike through some of the best trails of Pennypack Park, followed by the club meeting and annual elections at Jack’s Deli restaurant at 8502 Bustleton Ave.  A list of positions and candidates follows, and anyone wishing to run should e-mail the club at philly@mosaicoutdoor.org.  For more information about elections contact Jon at 856-787-0325, and for questions about the hike contact Don after 8 pm at 215-934-5676. §         Saturday June 21  8 pm  Miniature Golf  at Burholme Park Golf Center at 401 W. Cottman Ave. in the Northeast.  The cost is $6 for adults and $5 for children, and before the golf we will be going out for dinner at the Country Club Diner at Cottman and Summerdale Aves. in the Northeast at 6 pm.  For more information contact Gale at 215-331-8194.  Note that this event was originally scheduled for Saturday June 14 and was rescheduled due to bad weather.

§         Sunday June 22  12 noon  Trip to the Rosenbach Museum and Library  The museum features an exhibit on author Maurice Sendak and the library has many rare first edition books.  We will meet at 12 noon at the museum located between 2008 and 2010 Delancey place in center city, then go on a guided tour of the museum and library as well as explore it on our own.  The cost is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $5 for children.  Afterwards we will go out for dinner at Zahav, a new Israeli and Middle Eastern restaurant located at 237 St. James Place.  The menu features $5 - $13 small plates, $15-$16 kabobs, with a full dinner running about $35.  We will probably get to the restaurant around 5 pm, and for more information call Gale at 215-331-8194.

§         Sunday June 29  8:30 am  Hiking and Bird Watching at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge in Delaware.  The park is mostly tidal salt marsh and is home to many migrating birds.  The terrain is generally flat and is easy hiking.  Bring water and lunch.  Afterwards we may go out for dinner.  We will meet at 8:30 am at Olga’s Diner at the intersection of routes 70 and 73 in South Jersey, then carpool to the park.  For more information contact Jon at 856-787-0325.

§         Sunday July 13  12 noon  Trip to Island Beach State Park  Come visit this beautiful beach on a barrier island off the New Jersey shore.  We will meet at Olga’s Diner at the intersection of Routes 70 and 73 in South Jersey at 12 noon, then carpool to the park.  After going to the beach we may go out to dinner.  For more information contact Jon at 856-787-0325.

§         Saturday July 19  5 pm  Dinner at the Casablanca Restaurant  Come enjoy an 8 course dinner featuring Moroccan cuisine while being entertained by a belly dancer.  The cost is $27.50 per person, half price for children under 12, and the restaurant is located at 1111 Easton Rd. in Warrington, PA.  We will meet at the Bennigan’s at Cottman and Bustleton in the Northeast at 5 pm, then carpool to the restaurant.  For more information contact Janet at 215-673-9605.

§         Sunday July 20  11 am  Casino Bus Trip to the Showboat Casino in Atlantic City.  We will meet at the Wide World Travel at Cottman and Bustleton in the Northeast at 11 am to catch the 11:30 am bus to the Casino.  The cost is $21 round trip, but you get $20 back at the casino.  For more information contact Jay at 215-887-9530.

§         Sunday August 3  11 am  Trip to Parvin State Park  Come enjoy a short hike around the lake followed by swimming and boating.  A snack bar and showers are available, and there is a $2 entrance fee for the park.  We will meet at the Tiffany Diner at Roosevelt and Welsh Boulevards in the Northeast at 11 am, then carpool to the park.  For more information contact Don at 215-934-5676.

§          Sunday May 18  12 noon  Israeli Independence Day  Come celebrate Israel’s 60th anniversary at Eakin’s Oval near the art museum from 12 – 5 pm.

§         Sunday June 8  1:05 pm  Baseball Games  Come spend the afternoon watching 2 baseball games.  At 1:05 pm is the Trenton Thunder playing the Reading Phillies, and at 4:15 pm there is a coed charity softball game, with the Philadelphia Tigers playing another coed softball team.  Tickets for the 2 games are $10, and the stadium is located at 1 Trenton Rd., Trenton NJ 08611, by the Delaware River and next to the Katmandu night club.  For tickets call 215-338-2278, and for directions call 609-394-3300.

§         Friday June 20 – Sunday June 22  Taconic State Park Camping Weekend - Welcome in summer with a 10 mile hike along the scenic Taconic Ridge. Enjoy wonderful views of forested green hills and lakes, pastoral farm land and the Catskill Mountains from Mt Frissell,  http://americasroof.com/ct.html, Alander and Brace Mt. We'll also hike to the highest point in Connecticut and the tri point marker of NY/MA/CT. Reserve early to guarantee your spot. There is a 2 night minimum $17 per night, plus $9 service fee = $43. Group dinner at a local restaurant on Saturday night TBD.
